How Lightning Lanes Work at Disney World Now (And How to Skip the Lines Like a Pro)

If you’ve been Googling “What happened to Genie+?” or frantically asking Facebook mom groups how to avoid spending your entire day in line at Disney World — take a deep breath. You’re not alone. Disney officially retired Genie+ in 2024, and now we’ve got a new system: Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Pass, and for some guests, a Premier Pass.

Confused already?

Don’t worry. We'll break it down for you — so you know what to expect, how to use it, and how to avoid wasting precious park time in line.

What Is a Lightning Lane?

Lightning Lanes are Disney’s express lines for rides — the ones that let you skip the regular standby queue. There are now three types of Lightning Lane access:

1. Lightning Lane Multi Pass

Think of this as a bundled pass — it lets you pre-select three rides per park day.

2. Lightning Lane Single Pass

This is for Disney’s most in-demand attractions. You pay per ride and select a return time.

3. Lightning Lane Premier Pass (New & Exclusive)

This one’s for guests who want the ultimate no-stress, VIP-style experience. With the Lightning Lane Premier Pass, you get one-time access to nearly every Lightning Lane attraction in a single park — no return times, no ride juggling, and no app refreshing. You simply tap in and go whenever you’re ready.

When Can You Buy and Book?

Disney has finally made it easier to plan in advance! Here’s what you need to know:

  • On-site guests (Disney resort hotels):You can purchase and make ride selections 7 days before check-in, for your entire stay (up to 14 days).

  • Off-site guests:You can purchase and book 3 days before each park day — one day at a time.

All bookings open at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time on your eligible day, so set your alarm!

How Does the Multi Pass Work?

You choose three rides per park day in advance. Attractions are grouped into tiers.

Example: Magic Kingdom

  • Tier 1 (choose one):

    • Jungle Cruise

    • Peter Pan’s Flight

    • Space Mountain

    • Tiana's Bayou Adventure

  • Tier 2 (choose two):

    • Haunted Mansion

    • it's a small world

    • Buzz Lightyear

    • Pirates of the Caribbean

    • and more!

Once you use one, you can continue booking additional Lightning Lanes one at a time, after each Lightning Lane use, throughout the day.

How Does the Single Pass Work?

This works just like the old Individual Lightning Lane system. You:

  • Choose a time for a premium ride (like TRON or Rise of the Resistance)

  • Pay per person, per ride

  • Book it in the app — same 7-day or 3-day windows apply

These rides aren’t included in the Multi Pass and must be purchased separately.

How Does the Premier Pass Work?

  • You can use it on every ride with a Lightning Lane, including the ones normally sold separately through Single Pass.

  • You don’t choose ride times in advance — you just walk up and ride at your convenience.

  • Pricing is dynamic and varies by park and date, with costs ranging from $129 to $449 per person, per day.

  • It’s only valid for one park per day and must be purchased separately from your regular admission ticket.

Real Talk: Is It Worth the Money?

In most cases, yes — especially if:

  • You’re traveling during a busy time (holidays, school breaks)

  • You’ve got kids who melt down in long lines (we’ve all been there)

  • You want to make the most of a short trip

Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass can save hours of wait time — and now that you can book in advance, it’s way less chaotic than Genie+ ever was.

Pro Tips From a Travel Advisor

Here’s what I tell every client:

  • Download and set up the My Disney Experience app early — it’s essential

  • Make sure you have a non-expired form of payment set up in the app

  • Set an alarm for BEFORE 7:00 a.m. ET when it’s time to book

  • Know your “must-do” rides ahead of time

  • Know which rides are a smarter choice for booking, based on average wait times and time of day that Lightning Lanes are usually sold out. (I provide a guide for this to all of my clients)

And if this all sounds like a lot? That’s what I’m here for.
